From Hire to Inspire: Tips for Recruitment and Retention

I would like to share some HR solutions to challenges we face, as shared on the panel at the Chamber of SMEs this week.

Challenge #1

Finding the right candidates with the right skills

☑ Reduce turnover by engaging your people

✅ Invest in employees' training and development - Upskill and Reskill

✅ Use different recruitment sources

☑ Evaluate your employer brand

✅ Choose the right recruitment platform and source for the job.

Different platforms attract different job seekers.

☑ Collaborate with Educational Institutions on apprenticeship and internship schemes. It is a long term win-win strategy. Giving the opportunity to students to learn on the job and supporting education is critical for a quality development of our current and future workforce. Yes it requires patience and a developmental approach, but we were all students once, so this is also our corporate social responsibility to support youth in their educational and career journey. Collaborate with MCAST Institute of Tourism Studies | ITS University of Malta

✅ Tap into schemes that support employment for the unemployed, disabled and employability challenged.  Check out Jobsplus and the Lino Spiteri Foundation for Inclusive Employment

Challenge #2

Performance and work ethic issues

☑ Evaluate your recruitment and selection process

✅ Hire for the long term - evaluate work ethic, values and attitudes

☑ Ensure that your HR policies are in place and reflect the values and culture of the organisation

✅ Invest in your onboarding process, one that is aligned to your values and work ethic expected. Do not take it for granted. Just because you think something is obvious, it does not mean that it is to the new employee

☑ Have regular performance conversations with staff - understanding their challenges and issues. Adopt a developmental approach.

✅ Support your leaders through coaching and regular conversations. Leading a team is not easy, so be there.

☑ Enable a learning and developmental approach, encouraging learning on the job and more formal learning where required.

✅ Train your teams and tap into schemes developed to support learning at work. Check out Jobsplus and Malta Enterprise

☑ Learning should be strategically aligned with business needs and future vision. Have a learning and developmental plan in place.

✅ Evaluate your performance management system.
